This Incredible Middle-Grade Western Time-Travel Adventure Begins Here

Unlike other sixth-graders who enjoy sports and video games, Dominick Dalesandro is obsessed with the Old West — cowboys, outlaws, lawmen, and the rugged landscape. He has read countless books on the topic and has watched every Western on TV and in the movies. Despite being teased by his classmates about this unusual passion, Dominick can't shake his fascination with life on the prairie in the 1800s.
He is especially interested in Sheriff Amos "Lone Wolf" Malone, an Old West lawman who walked the streets of Abilene, KS, in the late 1880s. Each day, Dominick visits the basement of his local library to read about his favorite topic. One day, a librarian friend who shares his passion shows Dominick a rare, first-edition book she had found in the archives — “The Man Who Tamed the Wild West — The Unauthorized Biography of Amos ‘Lone Wolf’ Malone,” published in 1895.
Dominick opens the book and blows away the dust. A strange thing then occurs — the dust particles begin to swirl and glow, taking the shape of a cloud, then a funnel, then a man. Before Dominick realizes what has happened, Sheriff Amos Malone is standing before him. Dominick is frightened at first, but the sheriff assures him there is nothing to worry about. Sheriff Malone, who is nearing retirement age, has traveled to the future to recruit his replacement and believes young Dominick Dalesandro is the perfect choice.

Why Readers Love The Abilene Kid Series

The Abilene Kid continues to captivate young readers by blending adventure, mystery, and historical discovery into a fast-paced narrative. Fans of middle-grade Western time-travel novels are drawn to the way Dominick’s ordinary life transforms into an extraordinary journey through 19th-century Abilene, Kansas. The story’s emotional depth, combined with action-driven scenes, makes it appealing for reluctant readers and strong readers alike.

One of the strongest aspects of the series is its focus on character growth. Dominick Dalesandro begins as a curious sixth-grader with an unusual passion for the Old West, but his journey quickly pushes him into situations that require courage, quick thinking, and responsibility. This transformation allows readers to relate to him while also imagining themselves in his place, facing unknown challenges in a completely different era.

The time-travel element also keeps the story engaging and unpredictable. Each chapter introduces new discoveries and risks as Dominick interacts with the world of 1888 Abilene. The enchanted portal concept adds a layer of mystery that keeps readers invested in how and why these events are happening, while also building anticipation for what will come next.

Wild West Themes and Historical Inspiration

The Abilene Kid draws heavily from Wild West adventure books for kids, incorporating classic frontier elements such as sheriffs, dusty towns, and lawless landscapes. Set in Abilene, Kansas, this historical fiction brings to life a town shaped by cattle drives and frontier justice.

By combining authentic Western details with time-travel fantasy, the series creates a vivid setting that feels both educational and exciting, encouraging readers to explore more of American frontier history.
